The Protea Breakwater Lodge undergoes "extreme makeover"!

Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge is proud to announce that we are about to begin our much-anticipated R50 million refurbishment!

The refurbishment will incorporate all 191 bedrooms affecting all five bedroom types, including 2 Business Suites which will be adapted to accommodate the needs of the physically disabled, in accordance to Universal Access standards.  The passages and reception area are also to undergo a massive transformation.  October 2010 has been set as the official commencement month and it will take approximately 14 months to complete, the process will take place in four phases.

Phase One:

October to December 2010 - C Block (Restaurant Building)

Apart from our two restaurants, Stonebreakers and Time Out Cafe, this block will be shut down completely which will limit the impact of construction to our guests.  These 15 bedrooms will be refurbished and operational mid December.

Phase Two:

December to February 2011 - B Block (Prison Building)

The prison building houses our conference facilities, UCT's Graduate School of Business and bedrooms.  These 48 bedrooms will be completed by February.  This block too will be shut down completely during this period.

Due to the fact that "A Block" contains the majority of our bedrooms, we will be unable to close this building down completely.  Therefore actual building and rennovation work has been limited to between 9am and 5pm daily.  Once again, to limit the impact to our Guests, we will endeavour to allocate bedrooms as far from the affected areas as possible.

The images below depict the evolution of the hotel - past, present  and future:

Phase Three:

March to June 2011 - A Block (Hotel Building)

March sees the start of an additional 72 bedrooms in the Hotel.  Construction during this period will take us through to the end of June 2011.

Phase Four:

July to December 2011 - A Block (Hotel Building)

The final stretch of 52 bedrooms and the new look reception, which will give the sense of arrival that will undoubtedly compliment that what has been achieved in the bedrooms, will leave us with a brand new property going into 2012.

We know you are already wondering "What will a refurbishment of this magnitude do to the current rate?"  Please rest assured, while a slight increase in rate is inevitable - you have our guarantee that our unique selling point of being "The Most Affordable Accommodation within the V&A Waterfront" will stand true.
